Sustainability at Tunes: Clothing That Cares for Your Baby and the Planet
Have you ever wondered where that soft little bodysuit you just put on your baby actually comes from? Who sewed that seam, what cotton the fabric was woven from, and what happens to the packaging once you've unwrapped it?
At Tunes, we think about this every single day. Because when you make clothing for the most delicate skin in the world — a newborn's skin — you simply can't be indifferent to what that clothing is made of, or how it reaches your home.
For us, sustainability isn't a trendy word for a website. It's a series of everyday decisions: which fabric to order, how much to produce, where the offcuts go, and how to pack an order so we're not embarrassed by the box that arrives at your door — whether you're in Berlin, Warsaw, or Milan.
Here's an honest look at what our approach is built on.
Fabrics You Can Actually Trust
We have one non-negotiable rule for newborn bodysuits: not a single percent of synthetic fibre should touch a baby's skin. That rule starts long before sewing — with the choice of fabric itself.
Our cotton is certified to the GOTS standard (Global Organic Textile Standard). That means it's grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilisers, and processed without harmful chemicals at every stage — from field to finished fabric. For parents across Europe, GOTS is a familiar and trusted mark: if it's on the label, you can breathe easy.
On top of that, every fabric we use carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification — an independent test confirming the absence of harmful substances, dyes, and chemical compounds that can cause irritation or allergic reactions. It's the same principle behind everything we say about bodysuits: a newborn's skin spends its first months adapting to the world, and clothing shouldn't add to that job.
Our fabrics come from certified, carefully vetted suppliers in Turkey — a country with a long textile tradition and strict cotton-quality control.
We Sew It Ourselves, and We Sew It in Ukraine
We don't outsource production, and we don't hide our supply chain behind ten layers of middlemen. Every piece of Tunes clothing is made in Ukraine, by our own hands, in our own production facility.
Why does that matter for sustainability?
- A smaller carbon footprint. A shorter distance between production and shipping means far fewer transport emissions than manufacturing in Asia and shipping halfway around the world by sea or air.
- Full transparency. We know exactly who sewed each item, under what conditions, and with what attention to detail — the same flat seams and gentle closures we're always talking about.
- Quality control at every step. No batch travels "blind" — we see the entire process, from cutting to packing.
No Overproduction: We Make Only What's Needed
The fashion industry is one of the planet's biggest polluters, largely because of one thing: overproduction. Huge batches of clothing nobody buys eventually end up in landfill.
We've deliberately stepped away from that model. Tunes produces in small batches. In practice, this means:
- less leftover fabric that would otherwise need disposal;
- less unsold clothing waiting for a discount rack or a bin;
- the ability to respond to real demand instead of guessing and overstocking.
Yes, this requires more careful planning on our end. But the result is collections that actually get worn — not ones gathering dust in a warehouse.
A Second Life for Baby Clothes
Here's something worth remembering: baby clothes tend to outlive the single size a child wears them in. Babies grow fast — but a well-made bodysuit or a pair of leggings in quality cotton can easily survive a second, or even third, life: passed down to a younger sibling, shared with family friends, or given a new home through clothing-exchange programmes.
That's why we deliberately sew garments built to withstand that second life — sturdy seams, durable fastenings, fabric that keeps its shape wash after wash. That's what real sustainability looks like: not disposable clothing, but pieces designed for more than one owner.
Packaging Without Plastic
The box that arrives at your door is part of our responsibility too. We've moved away from plastic packaging in favour of:
- recyclable cardboard for boxes;
- kraft paper instead of plastic film;
- reusable eco-shoppers made of fabric for everyday use.
All of it can be recycled again or reused at home — kraft paper works beautifully for wrapping gifts, and an eco-shopper makes a perfect everyday bag for stroller walks.
Waste Doesn't Disappear — It Gets a Second Life
Making clothes inevitably creates fabric offcuts. The question is what happens to them next.
We don't send textile waste to landfill. Instead, we partner with Reevintex, a company specialising in textile recycling. The cotton scraps left over from cutting are given a new purpose — instead of sitting in a landfill for years to decompose.
The Sun Powers Our Production
One more step we're proud of: part of the electricity used in our production comes from solar panels. This reduces our reliance on fossil fuels and lowers the carbon footprint of every garment that leaves our hands.
